The Hammered range has been made for Asprey in the UK by a master glassmaker with over 30 years of experience. Each piece is first mouth blown over several stages, building up layers of clear and coloured glass, finishing with an outer clear layer. Subsequently, the 'battuto' (meaning 'struck' or 'beaten') method of cutting is used to decorate the surface, using a diamond grinding wheel to mark the surface of the glass. The overlapping irregularity creates a faceted effect akin to fish scales or hammered metal.
Each piece is unique, and the intense hand labour involved in the battuto finish alone takes over five hours. The top edge of each vase is highly polished to provide a contrast to the matt finish of the body.
Product Care Please handle with care and avoid contact with hard objects as this may damage the glass. Dust with a soft cleaning cloth or, if necessary, wash with warm soapy water, and dry with a soft cotton cloth.
The matte finished surface is highly delicate; please handle with gloves to avoid marking the finish. Any finger marks can be removed by treating the surface with olive oil applied with a soft cloth. Caution: these items are very heavy!

This masterpiece of the silversmith's craft was created in the Asprey workshops in the 1980s. Lifelike and exquisitely graceful, it was the pride of the Rosalind and Arthur Gilbert's villa in LA. It has been displayed at London's Victoria & Albert museum since October 2016.
